WTN Rocks and Minerals Riesling

by Tom N. » Thu Jun 25, 2009 8:28 pm

Clear straw yellow. Definite petrol and lemon on the expressive nose. Midpalate of steely acidity, petrol, and tart peach. Nice long finish of palate cleansing lemon squirt acidity, rocks and minerals. Medium bodied, relatively dry for German riesling. I really like this wine as it has a lot going on.

With food: Excellent match with fried pickerel (walleye to you in the US) that brings out the fruit in the wine.

2005 Kunstler riesling Rheingau 11.5% abv.

According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, Pickerel is a smaller cousin of the Northern Pike and Muskellunge http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/459399/pickerel. I've only heard the name used in this manner. However, according to Wikipedia, the name is used for both the fish described above and as an alternative name for Walleye or Yellow Pike, which is actually in the Perch family http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walleye.

Hi Rahsaan,

No it was not trocken. It actually says medium dry on the bottle. It did have some sweetness to it, but much less than I usually find in a riesling kabinett and a bit higher alcohol at 11.5%.

FWIW, trockens also have sweetness, and RS.

I've seen some producers do that. Schafer-Frohlich did that with their 2004 QbA Halbtrocken.

Medium dry was written in English. This wine really reminded me more of an Australian or Austrian dry riesling than a German riesling. It seems to me that the Germans prefer to keep most of their trocken rieslings for themselves.

Thanks for notes. Kunstler is new territory for me, but I have a few in drinking queue based on recs from the real Jay Miller.
