WTN: 2004 Baudry Les Grézeaux

by Jenise » Sun Jun 28, 2009 2:07 pm

2004 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux
Opened to sip while storm-watching last night and to eventually pair with a main course salad of heirloom tomato/avocado/basil and chives dressed with just olive oil, salt and pepper (boring detail, I know, but since salads and wine pairing has been under discussion....) This is the blackest Chinon I can recall seeing, and yet it doesn't really smell or taste of the typical black fruit (blackberry, black currant or blueberry). It's more toward black plum along with fennel, some green tobacco and what Marc D. once aptly referred to as "wet cement". Some earthiness is just beginning to show. Open and friendly without decanting, it was very satisfying and almost elegant as a sipper but the structure is here for this wine to continue to improve in the bottle for up to another five years. Very, very enjoyable.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Sounds nice and now that you mention it, a nice crisp Chinon with a good dose of fruit does indeed sound like a good salad match.

Jenise, I know the climate is milder out your way, but fresh heirloom tomatoes already??
Are they from-the-earth or greenhouse grown (or imported)? I have to wait until late August/early September for ours to show up.

Mark, I've already picked 8 tomatoes from my own garden! Amazing--never had a ripe one before August before, let alone in June. However, the tomatoes in this salad were from either California or Mexico, from where they've been coming in for weeks now.

Summer storms are great entertainment, and we can sit outside comfortably on warm, balmy days under the widow's walk and watch. This one came in from the west, so we watched it swallow the islands one by one. Who needs TV?

I'm jealous! We're 'enjoying' the effects of a rain-soaked endless spring, waiting for summer to kick in, and my few Black Cherokee plants to get growing in earnest.

Jenise, thanks for the notes. I have some of the 2005 (along with the other 2005 crus), but will hold off a while on them. It is helpful to read your note on the 2004.

Think it is time for a "Baudry Rocks" t-shirt.
