One red, another white:
2006 Vinha do Mouro Tinto, Vinho Regional Alentejano (Estremoz):
Here we have south of Portugal ripeness at 14.5% abv. But lovely, velvety fruit, dark and brooding. A mix of typical Alentejano grapes plus some Cab Sauvignon. Resembles a good Zinfandel with something from the old world. Probably a wine in enjoy in the short term; there is a more expensive wine under the Quinta do Moruro label. Very good wine for $10.
2008 Quinta de Cabriz Encruzado, Dao:
Bought this with the idea of trying to get a handle on the (white) Encruzado grape, considered one of the high quality grapes of the Dao region. The shocking thing is that this is partly barrel fermented, and while I don't always appreciate oak in my whites, it is done well here. Shockingly fresh lemony attack with some nice richness from the oak. The crisp/oily texture went well with the grilled octopus we were eating at the local Portuguese BYO. This is another wine from the Dao Sul empire but is a bargain at $7.
