WTN: Prieler Blaufrankish (Austria)

by Joe Moryl » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:22 pm

Wanted to calibrate my palate after trying some Lemberger (aka Blaufankish) in the Finger Lakes:

2006 Blaufrankish, Prieler, Johannishohe, Burgenland:

The color is a limpid mid-ruby. Nose is a bit shy with a touch of smoke, dark fruit and cabbage. Bright red cherry (with a hint of cough syrup) on the palate, with touches of graphite, licorice and some green herbs. Ripe, with a very good balance. Mid-bodied, light tannins. Tasted blind I might guess Cab Franc (Chinon?). Pretty nice wine, but nothing profound, $17.

Terry Theise compared Austrian Zweigelt to Cabernet Franc. Since one of the parent of Zweigelt is Blaufrankish your note makes definite sense in that regard.

I like modest Blaufränkisch a lot.

In the last two or three years I have come across at tastings much more ambitious Blaufränkisch from Moric which is impressive in the sip and spit context. I have not bought any, though, to test at the dinner table because of the price - for example, €72 for Alte Reben "Neckenmarkt" 2006 :!:

Does anybody here have good experience of luxury Blaufränkish?
