WTN: Avoiding a soft Willi

by David M. Bueker » Fri Jul 03, 2009 7:45 pm

2003 Willi Schaefer Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese (Mosel)
I had been thinking about checking in on some 2003s, and a conversation with Salil about how few bottles of WIlli Schaefer I actually open (versus own) sent me looking for a Schaefer from this unusual vintage. I'm glad to have checked in, as the wine is quite tasty, if not profound. A great deal of the lush, soft baby fat has melted away, and there's even a hint of a backbone poking through. A little of that RIesling smoky/petrol element is joining the party, and while still a little soft, the wine is refreshing on a summer afternoon.

Sounds very nice - Schaefer seems to have done really well in 03. I've had really great experiences with two bottlings of his Domprobst Spatlese. If you have any of the #9 or #11 from 03, worth checking into some time soon as well as they're in a fantastic place right now.

I know I have one of them, just not sure which. I'll check some time soon.

Indeed. I remember a delicious GD #11 from a month ago but nice to hear that it extends more broadly. Good for Schaefer. And for us!

I think a broader examination of 2003 spatlese (and perhaps kabinett if I can get to what little I have) is in order for the fall.

Yeah, I remember I opened the same a couple of days after you posted on that wine and it was awesome.

I also had his Domprobst #09 a year+ ago; fabulous wine then and I doubt it's changed for the worse since I had it.

Now I'm waiting for the title of a WTN for a Willi from a colder vintage...

Well a while back I was chided by a friend for leaving my Willi in the fridge.
