We had one of those breaks in summer's heat this weekend. The daytime highs were in the '70s with evenings in the 50s and low 60s. In short it was beautiful.
Last night Laura and I got together with friends for some outdoor cooking, and wines that had no prayer of working with the food but that we just wanted to drink.
2007 St. Innocent Freedom Hill Chardonnay
I guess it's all about personal taste, as I found this hopelessly oaky, but our friends commented on the subtle oak. In any event there wasn't much there for me except oak, but the bottle got drained pretty quickly.
2007 Leitz Riesling Ein Zwei Dry 3 Trocken
This is getting better with time, developing a greater harmony between fruit and acid while also expanding a touch in texture. Good stuff for a bargain price.
2007 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese 'Schmitt'
Just as good as ever. The balance is perfect, the mouthfeel is refreshing & the finish is nearly endless. Very, very fine wine that was totally fitting for the day.
2006 Pride Cabernet Sauvignon
There is no reason in the world that I should like this wine, but I do. Regardless of the very ripe fruit and healthy shot of oak I like the wine. It's the anomaly in my palate preferences.
