WTN: Two Miserable Nebbiolos...(short/boring)

As I ramp up to Wed's NAP event, I tried two more Nebbs:
1. StClairWnry NewMexico Nebbiolo (12.5%; http://www.StClairVineyards.com) Deming/NM NV: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; very slight floral/lilacs some earthy/grapey/herbal/sagebrush/hybridy rather dull nose; soft/fat/flabby med.strong very grapey/off-dry slight herbal/sagebrush/earthy flavor; short somewhat sweet grapey/herbal/sagebrush/earthy finish w/ no tannins; no apparent Nebbiolo character that I can find; dull as dishwater; glad I didn't take this out for NAP. $10.00

2. Dessilani Spanna DOC Colline Novaresi (13%) Fara 2005: Med.light color; somewhat pungent/tarry/earthy/rusty steel/Kansas root cellar bit floral/lilacs/violets/Nebb/geraniums somewhat spicy interesting nose; hard/tannic/astringent/lean slight floral/geraniums some tinney/metallic slight brett/horsecollar acid/hurtey flavor; long metallic/geraniums acid/astringent/tannic beets/root cellar/earthy finish; interesting nose but hurts llike hell on the palate; like biting down on a piece of aluminum foil between the fillings in your molars, it send a jolt thru your palate; overpriced at $25.00.

1. NAP: The inagural meeting of NAP (Nebbiolo Advocates & Producers) will be held this Wed up in Sebastapol. It will gather together a bunch of the NorCal Nebbiolo producers/growers to talk & taste Nebbiolo. It should really be an interesting event. I'm thinking of getting T-Shirts made up for the event. The back side will have the names of all the participants. The front side will have a drawing of a lil' ole winemaker banging his head against the side of a barrel in frustration.
Attendees will be EmilioCastelli/NakedLadyWnry; PaxMahle/WindGap; Adam&DiannaLee and RyanZepaltas/Novy; KenMusso/DueVigne, and NateWeis/AnticaWnry/AtlasPeak. Since he has already declared Nebbiolo a failure in Calif, RP was not invited. Susan & I will be there to take notes. I expect the organization to grow in leaps & bounds and eventually dwarf ZAP in size. And some day I'll be able to brag that I followed NAP from the very start.

Sadly a similar experience with a 1995 or 1997 Dessilani (especially re: the piercing pungency, verging on acrid in our case). Such a shame as there's clear potential (and historical success) for this region, yet without the prestige of Barolo & Barbaresco, they've rarely had the income to invest in improving the wines and ... well ... its just one of them viscous circles.

I know your a big advocate of the grape in the US, but I'll continue to get mine from Northern Italy where they have a few hundred years worth of experience dealing with it.

The Dessilani sounds like wine to stay away from. Thanks for the heads up.

Nebbiolo does well in Virginia where Barboursville makes a very good rendition. If you ever get out this way, I'll happily share a bottle or two with you. (I will admit a preference to nebbiolo from N. Italy, but I think there is a future for it in the US.)

Well, Mark....for $2 I get a 2$C SauvignonBlanc that speaks of SB and SanJoaquinVlly terroir. For $8 more, is it too much to
ask for a Nebb that speaks of Nebbiolo?? Don't think so!!
