WTN: 2000 Flor de Pingus

by Jenise » Fri Aug 21, 2009 2:24 pm

Neighbors Jerry and Trini invited us for a Spanish meal last night, so I took this wine to share. Dense purple-black color. Tangy huckleberry fruit on the palate with echoes of red raspberry fruit, coffee, and good foresty green flavors in the background. Not decanted, and drunk out of glassware that was too confining to properly show its wares, it showed better the longer it sat in the glass but in spite of it being a very fine and enjoyable bottle of wine it was missing the suppleness and sensual aromatics of the 2001 that had me rolling around on the carpet a few months ago. While nursing my glass I thought a lot about whether or not this wine can improve and become more 01-like with further time in the bottle--I have no prior experience aging these wines, and there was only one recent note on Cellar Tracker which seemed to think the wine was at peak (but that could be by someone who prefers and rarely drinks anything but very young wines)--and I have to admit I couldn't quite decide but will bet my remaining bottles nonetheless on the chance of that happening. The acidity is certainly there to carry it awhile. Any opinions out there? Oswaldo?

As the supply of reasonably priced 2001s dwindles, I've been eyeing the 2000s and therefore welcome your note, greatly. But it saddens me that it came up a bit short and I got the desired information at your expense. Do you have more to try with proper glasses in more conducive circumstances? I have only two left of the 2001s, and I'm tempted to cryogenically freeze them...

Oswaldo, it only came up "a bit short" in comparison to the voluptuous 01--it really was a lovely wine--and as I said there could have been more than one reason for that. I have one, maybe two more bottles of this and three or four of the 01, which is not enough to blow another in the name of science, so I'll opt for letting the other 00's rest awhile longer. Which doesn't solve your dilemna, exactly, but let me answer the question would I buy more if they were available. Yes!

I see, so I can't write this off my list. You are indeed merciless! Is that a byproduct of the two week-long labor?

Some would question whether, in fact, I was ever finally "delivered". 8)

One of the factors could be that 2001 was a better vintage than 2000. Perhaps (as has been my experience) the '01 is just a much better wine.
