WTN: 2004 Gunderloch

by Dale Williams » Tue Sep 01, 2009 8:44 am

Last night Betsy wanted to use up some extra peanut sauce, made an old favorite , a chicken salad with red cabbage and the sauce. I went Riesling, the 2004 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Spatlese (Rheinhessen). Big Rhine powerhouse of a wine, peaches and petrol, sweet for Spatlese (at least for my more Mosel palate), good length, some spiciness. I revisit over several hours, I like it best when it's really cold, seems to give it more acidic backbone. This probably deserved to age another 10 years, but it was quite nice now. B/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I'm not really sure where the 2004s are at right now. Some are quite open, while others are only showing sweetness with little fruit development. As I have been roundly chastised in certain quarters (mostly domestic) for going after the 2001s too quickly I will lay off any more of the 2004s in the interest of self-preservation.

This was probably at least partly closed. But it was at hand level in cellar. :)
