Opening bottles for my tasting group's first event of the season:

1997 Ridge Geyserville: Corked

2006 Chateau D'Arsac Haut Medoc Winemaker's Cuvee No. 2: Corked to hell and back

Thankfully no more, but

But I bet you loved the sound when the cork came out of the bottle!

And isn't that really the reason you drink wine, so you can hear that romantic sound?

Sure, screwcaps would've likely preserved the wine in its pristine condition---but you wouldn't have heard that sound!!!

What is the relationship between corked wine and romance?
Or am I being obtuse today
(just *today* you may well ask...?).

The romance comment is nothing more than a little joke that Salil & I have adopted whenever we have a corked wine. It's a direct shot at the idea that the cork is part of the romance of wine.
