WTN: A contender for the best wine of the year....

by Saina » Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:01 pm

  • Williams & Humbert Rare Old Dry Amontillado Solera Especial VORS 30yo Jalifa - Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry (9/23/2009)

c.26€; 19,5% abv. Brown/orange. A lovely scent of rancio and nuts, some citrus, nicely lifted and chalky, incredibly complex. Dry but rich and racy. Awesome! Does what it says on the tin.

Funny how sometimes awesome wines invoke in me poetry more boring than Wordsworth (and he could be boring outside of the Lake District, too...); yet sometimes I actually get to the point. No correlation with, what is taken as fact, that the most awesome wines inspire the longest prose.

p.s. this 750 was drunk over 5 days - a generous glass per day. I did find deterioration on the last day, so I still disagree with those who say that Sherries last brilliantly once opened. I prefer the liveliness of the first 1-3 (maybe 4) days.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

And what did it say on the tin?

I simply meant that to me it tasted just like Amontillado should.

Nice to see Sherry notes once in a while. While I like Sherry I never seem to buy or drink much of any except PX. Odd.

The nice thing about sherry....

is if you pour a glass and it's "sherried," that's not a flaw.
Same with Madeira if it's Madeirized.
