Dinner tonight was fairly simple; sweetcorn from the farmer's market nearby roasted over a gas flame and then rubbed with some Indian spices, and some stir-fried lemon rice with lentils. Accompanying was a recording of Beethoven's 6th Symphony (Bruno Walter with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra) that David Bueker had given me some time ago, and the 2007 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie Vieilles Vignes Clos des Briords.
[Whew - and people say German labels are long?]
There is a lot of pleasure here for a very reasonable price ($11 I think at Table & Vine). This is very light on its feet with bright acidity and just 12% alcohol, very mineral-driven with chalky, saline and oyster shell notes over citrus fruit flavours that are a bit austere initially, and over the course of dinner this becomes rounder in the mouth with the fruit gaining in depth and some gentle yeasty and biscuity elements emerging. Lovely.
