Notes from the Thienpont Dinner at Old Manila
Terra Burdigala Blanc 2007 – AOC Bordeaux. Not a bad nose but very acidic.
Terra Burdigala St. Emilion Grand Cru 2006 – Very nice nose. Dusty, leathery and very dry. This has a dessicated feel to it. Powerful, spicy finish. Needs at least 30 minutes of air to be approachable. Not bad.
Chateau La Prade 2004 – Sweet berry nose. Soft, inviting. Good fruit but very dry. An excellent match for the pepper seared tuna loin. Good wine.
Chateau Puygueraud 2004 – Very dark. Lovely nose. Tobacco. Firm, Complex. Good balance. Round and quite ready. A bit of soy sauce comes out after about an hour of air. Very good.
Vieux Chateau Certan 2006 – Very sweet, slightly exotic nose. Pencil shavings. Fine and smooth. Strong coffee. Plummy but very dry. There is some sweetness on the finish. Not exactly soft but the tannins aren’t too aggressive either. Could really use more time to open up but it is very attractive now. Very good but will be excellent with time.
