WTN: Frustrating wines

by Salil » Fri Oct 02, 2009 8:18 pm

1999 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie
Interesting aromatics with a lot of leathery funk and some herbal green notes, but on the palate it's just austere with little flavour up front and a lot of tart acidity, quite boring to drink and showing a little alcohol and woody bitterness on the back end. Bleh.

2004 Kruger-Rumpf Scheurebe Spätlese
From Dautenpflanzer, though not specified on the label (thank you German laws!)
Frustrating in the sense that I opened this looking for something exotic, spicy - truly Scheurebe - whereas this tastes like a very rich, sweet Riesling. More Auslese than Spätlese with honeyed aromatics and quince, peach and melon fruit; with air some of the Scheu element starts to peek through with a hint of green mango in the aromatics and riper mango flavours on the palate, but the honey/ripe white fruitedness of a big Auslese still dominates the flavour profile. Still very tasty, with decent acids and a long finish - just not what I was looking for, particularly after an 04 Catoir Scheurebe opened earlier in the week that also tasted more like a Riesling.

(Why isn't there more Scheurebe out there in the world?)

You were looking for "spicy" in Scheurebe? I'll admit that is not something I go looking for in Scheu.

Bad choice of words - something more exotic and floral/herbal, along the lines of sage/lavender/thyme, which I've found in a lot of Scheu aromatics.

That makes sense to me, but sadly it's not a common component of Kruger Rumpf Scheurebe. Look to the Pfalz young Jedi.

Pity about the `99 Salil. What kinda vintage was that?

Generally a pretty mediocre red Loire vintage though some people made very pretty wines. If I remember correctly this is when Joguet was still in their slump so it's somewhat of a double whammy.
