WTN: von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Auslese 2007

by Bill Hooper » Thu Jun 17, 2010 4:01 am

Even now this is auslese that drinks like Mittel Mosel spätlese. Hollunderbluten flowers, lime and nectarine, juniper, cinnamon and an intriguing white chocolate flavor lingering in the background. Its all about different voices sounding off now before harmony is learned and achieved, but it is delicious all the same. This is the first 07 German Riesling that I´ve tasted in a while (I´ve been getting so used to the 2008s and now the 2009s are on the shelf!) It was a lovely treat.

Cheers,
Bill

I've always appreciated the sheer elegance and drinkability of the von Schubert wines. This sounds like another one.

Nice. You must be enjoying yourself!

I was briefly in Berlin last week but never got around to buying/looking at/drinking any wine.

Too much (fun) work and then beer. But no complaints. We're not starved for German wine on this side of the Atlantic.

I haven´t had much time to go wandering yet or do much serious tasting, but I´ll do my best to catch up! What do you like for Beer in Berlin? Kindl Ampel?

I must admit I usually go Bavarian-style with Hefe-weizen at first, just because I love the juicy flavors.

Have you ever tried Plank? Exceptional quality wheat beers that shouldn´t be hard to find stateside. I´m also a big fan of Ayinger Ur-weizen.

Always adored the Von Schubert wines from the Maximin Gruenhaeuser estate. I'm glad to see this one was true to form.

Unfortunately, I'm allergic to wheat beers--I've tried them on several occasions and I've always ended up with a splitting headache within 15 minutes after tasting the beer, so I've given up on them. Oh, well.

I've never been much of a beer drinker--it was mostly cocktails before I got into wines. But, while living in Germany I developed some appreciation for the Dunkel Biers (dark beers)--especially Alt Dusseldorfer.

I´m sorry to hear that, Paul. Thank god there are thousands of other beers out there. Are you allergic to wheat in bread too?

Cheers,
Bill

I´m with you on the Alt. Germany makes a lot of good ales (besides the wheat beers) like Alt and Kölsch that are overlooked because of all the lager. Schade.

Prost!
