Not that many people get around to tasting at David Hill winery since it's a ways off the beaten Newberg/McMinneville/Salem path, but it's well worth seeking out. You taste (for free) from a large and solid collection of well-made wines in an old 1800's farmhouse situated in one of the most picturesque locations I've seen in Oregon, and your wine tasting will conclude, if you're lucky, with a taste of this pinot noir. The Blackjack Vineyard was planted in 1965, back when no one was taking Oregon pinot seriously.
On the nose, complex, sweet black fruit and florals hint at a wine that could be from almost nowhere else; there's also a touch of iodine. On the palate more plummy black fruit with bergamot, sumac and a touch of pepper. Shows well on first pour and doesn't really change during the course of the bottle, but there are enough tannins and acidity to hold this wine here for 2-4 more years. Paired very very well with grilled cornish game hens marinated in a sweet maple glaze.
