WTN: Kiona Zin RedMtn '05...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jul 05, 2010 3:05 pm

Tried this Sat at Susan's w/ Grilled Teriyaki Bluefin Tuna:
1. Kiona Zin RedMtn/WashState (www.KionaWine.com; 13.5%) BentonCity/WA 2005: Med.color; some blackberry/earthy/boysenberry/Zin bit spicy interesting nose; fairly tart earthy/mushroomy slight blackberry/Zin bit tannic/hard flavor; med.long tannic/hard ratherr earthy/mushroomy slight blackberry/boysenberry/Zin finish; needs several yrs yet; not a lot of bright fruit Zin character and pretty terroir driven; more like a CalaverasCnty or ElDorado Zin because of the earthy character; this is how they'd make Zin in the Savoie if they could; interesting/atypical rendition of Zinfandel. $25.00

I'm glad Kiona is still around. I visited them in 1999, and had a lovely visit. Their reserve Cabernet was very nice on release & 5 years later.

Although I didn't follow them from the very start, I do recall back in the late 80s/early 90s they had a really fine Lemberger from Kiona.

Red Mountain do make some good fruit. Lot of it got overoaked, but that was more the times than anything.

Not to brag, Hoke...but I did follow them from the very start. One of Kiona's founding partners was JimHolmes, who worked
at the Hanford plant of DOE. He was in LosAlamos for a meeting, had heard from one of my wine group members about our
tasting group, and gave a presentation of his wines to us. The Lemberger was one of the standouts.
Jim left Kiona some yrs ago and now devotes his efforts to farming the Ciel du Cheval vnyd in the RedMtns AVA.
Don't know if the Lemberger grapes in this wine came from his vnyd or not.
