WTN: 2009 Dashwood Sauv Blanc

by Jenise » Wed Jul 07, 2010 10:12 am

This little cheapie from New Zealand ($8 or $9 in my area) is a fantastic value. Let me emphasize that: FANTASTIC. Big gooseberry-lime fruit, racy but balanced acidity--wow. I'm going to load up.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Lucky dog! We don't get it here, but it sounds a great summer wine!

I had an earlier vintage that didn't impress me or live up to the big ratings the shelftalker indicated it had received, but this bottle last night was superb. I've had some decent kiwi savvies at around this price over the years, but I don't rememeber ever encountering a knockout like this one. I'll bring you a bottle on Friday.

I sell this here in Oregon and it goes back and forth between $9-10. I would certainly agree with your comments. I have found one at $10 that I think is even better. It is Clifford Bay 2009 Awatere Valley. We got this into our market about 5 months ago. This is another level or 2 higher intensity than the Dashwood. They also have a Pinot Noir 2009 Marlbnorough for $15. The Pinot needs a little more time but is showing quite nice. I found it much better on day 2 and 3.

I had a glass of Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc with a trout dish at a restaurant recently. It was okay but I think I prefer Kim Crawford, Coopers Creek or Bedford Road Estate. The Dashwood sounds very enticing. I will look for it.
