WTN: Dehlinger Syrah GoldRidgeVnyd '00..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Jul 21, 2010 11:50 am

Tried last night w/ my Farro Risotto w/ Grilled Onions & Radacchio and HotSopresatta & Proscuitto, topped w/ deStefano Burrata:
1. Dehlinger Syrah GoldRidgeVnyd/RRV (EB; 14.2%) 2000: Dark color w/ slight bricking; some pungent/ozone/WWII beacon slight Rhonish/roasted light pencilly/Dehlinger oak strong blackberry/Syrah/licorice/black cherry cola complex beautiful perfumed nose; lightly tart some pungent/roasted/Rhonish/gamey smooth/balanced strong black cherry cola/Syrah bit peppery/spicy some pencilly/toasty/oak complex/smokey flavor; very long smooth/balanced/polished very slight tannic roasted/pungent/smokey/Rhonish strong black cherry cola/Syrah/blackberry/slight peppery complex finish; a beautiful classic Dehlinger red that's near its peak or slightly beyond. $31.25

1. I don't think TomDehlinger gets the recognition he deserves among us RhoneHeads for the quality of his Syrahs. They're not particularly big & extracted, not 95+ wines. They remind me of a Syrah made by a Pinot producer. They're pretty balanced & drinkable upon release, but they age might well.

2. I hate wines like this. Generally on Tues night, I get home from fencing about 9:30pm and start to make dinner. I usually cast about for something decent to drink so I can save some for folks to try at my tasting the following night. Occasionally this doesn't happen. Sometimes I'll pull a wine that's so friggin' good, one small sip demands another. And, before I know it, instead if drinking 1/3'rd to 1/2 the btl...the whole friggin' btl is gone/gone. Oy....such was last night!!!

Tom,

Thanks for the note. Seems I still have one of these.

Absolutely, Tom. Totally agree with you on this.

A good friend and neighbor is a Dehlinger fan. I was very happy to help him finish a bottle of the 2003 Syrah the other week!
