2001 Roagna Barola, La Rocca e la Pira
Light red with a hint of orange rim.
Aromatic, etheric nose which grows with time in the glass (the wine was not decanted prior to serving).Very much of a traditionalist's Nebbiolo nose. Certainly loads of tar and roses plus more than just a hint of paint and glue, but in some rather strange way still keeping on the acceptable side of the limit.
Fresh, quite acidic attack. Growing, aromatic taste with lots of intensity. Great, lively acidity and, again, that glue showing up, but still acceptable. The tannins are there, just as they should, but not too dominant. They are fine-grained and chalky, giving a great mouthfeel to the chewable aftertaste. Long, smokey and very pleasant. A fine, traditional and classically fine-grained, sandy Barolo.
