My Jadot tasting was a real treat!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:07 pm

Last Saturday, I was able to assist at my fave winestore as 24 participants sat down with Nicolas Dewe to taste some of the recent Jadot Burgundies currently available here in W Canada. Very enlightening evening as I am not a big Burgundy aficionado and as you see most of the wines tasted were recent vintages.

"If the fish is not fresh, forget the chef", a reference relating to the `05 vintage!

First Flight.

1) `02 Beaune Clos des Ursules. Very pale red with light browning on the rim. Lots of acidity, black pepper on the nose, coffee, earth, cherry. Flagship wine for Jadot, good value, $72 Cdn.

2) `05 Chambolle Musigny Les Fuees. More depth of color than above wine, lots going on here. Soft tannins, great finish, plum, cherry. Excellent acidity, close to $100 Cdn. My WOTN.

3) `05 Beaune Les Boucherottes. Salty nose, lovely red fruits. Good tannins, great acidity. Only $60.

4) `05 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine. For many, top wine of the first flight! Pale strawberry color, soft tannins, spicy nose, good grip. Very masculine, earth, forest floor. Not bad for $80 I`d say. I cannot hazard a guess how long to cellar this charmer!

2nd Flight.

5) `99 Clos de Vougeot. A surprise from one of the store owners. Beautiful color, light bricking on rim. Now this has some tannins, red berry, lovely and an honor to drink I thought.

6) `02 Clos de Vougeot. Big potential here, less red than the `99. Oak on nose is noted, dark berry and cocoa. $125 Cdn.

7) `05 Clos de Vougeot. One for the long haul, much lighter color than 6. Found it closed up, was busy doing water etc so not much attention paid. Sorry. Oh, $185.

Last wine was the `05 Latricieres-Chambertin. Did not taste as busy rushing around clearing food plates. I heard "floral nose, gd acidity, brief oak". Not much help eh!

Dessert was the `76 Fonseca which you are all familiar with!!

Cost of the tasting was $110 Cdn and Beef Bourguignon was served, plus some cheeses.

Not a bad lineup! One thing that stands out for me re. Jadot is just how good and consistent the wines are across pretty much every appellation and price point - I've had $15 St. Verans and Cru Beaujolais (love his Lumieres Morgon) from them that were lovely, right through to outstanding bottlings of his Chevalier 'Demoiselles' and CM 'Amoureuses'. One of my go-to guys in Burgundy for quality and consistency pretty much any year.

What no whites?

Apart from that, a lovely line-up and not as young as your introduction made me expect. We will be lucky if the Jadot importer in Brussels shows us anything older than 07/08 this autumn. You did particularly well to be shown 02 and 99 Clos de Vougeot, both of which should be wonderful drinking in a few years time.

Very interesting notes Bob.

The Beaune Clos des Ursules is a staple of my cellar. The 2001 is starting to drink very well now, while the '99 needs much more time. I have not even dreamed about opening a 2002 yet.

Please explain the quote. I thought '05 was a great vintage. Help me with this.

I guess if you could not make good wine in `05, look around for another line of work!
