Ferragamo Chianti

by PaulaJ » Wed Oct 13, 2010 2:50 pm

I have a number of bottles of Ferragamo Chianti dating from 1977 through 1985. I have been unable to find any information on these. Will they still be good to drink? I am a novice when it comes to wine.

What very little information I was able to find is that there is a modern estate "Il Borro," which is owned by the Ferragamo family, but they purchased the estate in 1993, and there is no information either way on whether they owned any wine estates before then.

78, 82, and 85 are rated as strong years for Tuscany. But only the very best estates could have produced Chianti that would have lasted this long (if it were Brunello, that would be another story). What kind of bottles are they in? If they are in the wicker-basket bottles, you can basically assume they are vinegar. If they are in standard bottles, there is some chance, albeit very small, that they may still be palatable. But, the only way to find out is to open them, so why not try one? It might be very interesting to taste one.

What Ryan said. Would add that whether or not you find the wines good enough may depend on your liking for slightly necrotic wines. Some wine lovers are keener on that than others.

whether in fiasco or standard bottles, if it says just Chianti it's not a good bet for aging this long. If it's Chianti Classico (or maybe Rufina) a bit better odds. If Chianti Classico Riserva, then not bad odds for the 78 and 85 if good storage conditions (a good vintage CCR in good shape is only Chianti from this period that might have any real monetary value, and with a producer no one knows that would be minimal).

In any case, it won't hurt you, give it a try!
