Bert Simon?

by Joe Moryl » Mon Oct 18, 2010 11:17 pm

David, or any of the other German wine lovers:
Tonight I'm drinking a super '04 Riesling Spatlese Serriger Wurtzberg from Bert Simon. From what I understand, Simon recently retired (2005 the last vintage?). Does anyone know who is now working the vineyards?

Dr. Jochen Siemens is running the estate now. More of the wines are now being made in a more dry-tasting style (with some focus on Spatlese feinherb and Spatlese trocken), and the estate's now referred to as Dr. Siemens.

I have not tasted the wines yet, but they're on my list (Crush is selling them).

JJBuckley was offering the 05 Serrig Herrenberg GKA at $26 this AM, I decided to try 3 though they're not on my normal buy list.

Thanks, Salil. Siemens is a new name for me, so I will keep an eye out. The Simon Spatlese was in the classic style: sweet with 8% abv but absolutely lovely balance and nuance. The price on the Herrenberg GKA sounds good - I seem to recall getting the Spatlese for very cheap, as if it were being closed out.

There's been lots of Simon hitting the market at cheap prices recently. Lyle/Grapes offered a bunch in a recent email, and I remember Crush having some very attractive prices (didn't bite, woo hoo - must show off a rare moment of restraint :D) on some Simon Beerenauslese some time ago. Garagiste had also been offering quite a bit (and older stuff) in their emails in the last few years - had bought some '98 Serriger Wurzberg Spat at about $20 a couple of years ago that was lovely.
