WTN: Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2009

by Bruce Hayes » Wed Oct 20, 2010 3:32 pm

Marlborough
Delegats Wines

Bright yellow in the glass.

Gooseberry, herbal on the nose.

Medium weight, intense gooseberry, lime, veggy, good acidity, rich, clean, juicy.

Gooseberry, mouthwatering on the finish.

While there was nothing at all wrong with this wine, I found it rather boring and one dimensional, not revealing anything beyond the intense gooseberry, even after several glasses.

Purchased at $16.95 (Canadian).

I would agree with your assessment of the Oyster Bay. If you like Sauvignon Blanc with more intensity, see if Clifford Bay 2009 Awatere Valley is available in your area. I sell it here in Oregon for $10. When we were at a Costco in Houston last week it was $7. My first 2010 to try was a brand called Cupcake from California who sourced their SB from Marlborough. I was amazed at how good it was for $9.

I have heard that the St Supery SB from Calif is back to previous strength. Recent vintages have been so-so.
Agree Oyster Bay is pretty basic juice.

Yeah, basic juice at a non-basic price. Note that the wine is normally $18.95 in Ontario and I was "lucky enough" to buy it on sale.
