WTN: Haardt Rieslaner

Weingut Weegmüller Haardter Mandelring Rieslaner Spätlese 2007 -Pfalz, Germany 8,0%

I have had a great time exploring some of the Pfalz estates that I'd never heard of. I have discovered that Weegmüller makes good wine. They are not the picture of perfection that Müller-Catoir often dances with, but they are good on a more modest scale. There was also a Beerenauslese in 2007 and I suspect that Weegmüller decided to put a bigger gap between it and this by declaring this Auslese 'Spätlese', but Auslese It clearly is. Whatever its called, its delicious. Super-ripe peach and tangerine fruit, blood orange, aloe, wax, and heating oil. Rich, but with enough acidity to balance the scales. It would be fun to look in on this in a couple of years.

Weegmuller emerged from nowhere with their 2002 vintage in the USA, and then just as quickly slipped back into total obscurity.

Good to hear the wines are still nice. I thought the few I had were good, but that's all.

It looks like there might still be an east-coast importer, but what is a nice, affordable (11€), everday drinker is probably closer to $25+ all said and done back in the US. Not that there are too many Rieslaner options even in that range.

For value in Rieslaner (and Scheurebe, Huxelrebe and a few other things) I look to Darting!
