New column I'm writing...

Just wanted to let my buds around here know that I have a new writing gig. (I think it's called 'shameless self promotion". It can also be called spam, so if Robin and the other keymasters want to delete this, I won't squawk. On the other hand, maybe I have built enough goodwill over the years they'll leave it up.)

Have been doing some writing for the Examiner.Com as Portland Spirits Examiner.

Now they've appointed me as the National French Wine Examiner, so I'll be doing a continuing column on anything and everything having to do with French wine. (So if any of you out there are ITB, feel free to funnel information to me. Hint, hint.)

Hey, congratulations! I've enjoyed your spirits columns, and now this. Retirement isn't turning out too bad for you after all, is it? :wink:

Since I have significantly more jobs now than I did when I was in corporate employ, I guess I've been "promoted", Jenise. :D

Writing two columns, a blog, freelancing for magazines, doing dinners and events, consulting, judging, repping for various brands, curriculum design and development, writing education programs, teaching college courses... it sure keeps it varied!

One of the things I have in mind as a continuing feature for the French Wine Examiner column is to post an unending series of personal reflections of people relating stories about their French wine epiphanies and love affairs. Not the pros and the hacks, but simply people, people who have had special moments with French wines, from the committed (or should be) Burgundy lover to the Gamay geek to the Chinonaphile....anything and everything having to do with a memorable moment with French wine.

Want to start? :D :D

I'd be honored! I'll do White Burgundy. Much as I love Bordeaux and others, white burg's the best story. :)

Second that comment about white Burgundies. But really, trying to pick the best of the French is an exercise in futility, to say the least. (Although forced to pick, WB would be right up there.

I'm soliciting. Seriously: I'm looking for good French wine stories. Get one to me and I'll make you a nationally distributed story teller. You won't get any money, but you'll be briefly famous. Just get me the story and give me permission to publish!

Curious as to why the Ch.d'Yquem folks have to be involved in a by-the-glass program? They give the restaurant
a price break?? What's to prevent Joe'sDiner from doing d'Yquem by the glass?

And what would be so terrible if a diner were to offer d'Yquem by the glass? Might go very well with some of the peach, apricot and even apple pies that I have feasted on in American diners.

Thanks, Tom.

I have very little control over the pic insertion with the platform Examiner uses. The new platform, which is supposed to be better than the old platform, but significantly isn't.

Re the wine by the glass program: It's all about the publicity, innit? If Yquem chooses some particular partners to showcase (and not incidentally publicize in the process) to kick of their campagin for by-the-glass, they get media attention. They also get to work with those particular restaurants to at least assist in suggesting what types of food pairings are used.

I had a long conversation with Pierre Lurton and he was emphatic that Yquem was problematic as a 'wine with dessert', and he considered it suitable for only a very few, fairly simple desserts. He opined (and I agreed) that Yquem is much more versatile and functional as an aperitif wine---which, unfortunately, few people in the US understand.

What it comes down to is pushing usage...suggesting/promoting/creating a better way of serving Yquem (one glass at a time instead of ordering a bottle off a list), publicly establishing Yquem as an aperitif wine, or wine with savory instead of sweet foods, etc.

When's the last time you saw someone order a full bottle of Yquem off a list. The rarefied price and rarefied style makes that answer predictable: it doesn't happen very often. People will default to the by-the-glass port or sherry or madeira or vin santo. But if Yquem were listed by the glass, all of a sudden it becomes an 'affordable luxury". And they sell more!

The bar at the Conrad Hotel in Chicago offered Chateau d' Yquem by the glass. At least they did so on the one occasion that my wife and I stopped there for a drink several years ago. I believe that it sold for $55 per glass. We didn't buy any, but the bartender said that it sold quite well.
