WTN: Remo’s birthday

by David from Switzerland » Sun Jan 23, 2011 9:14 pm

Daniel Vollenweider Riesling Spätlese Gold Capsule Wolfer Goldgrube 2009
The ripeness and sweetness of an Auslese, or almost. Very, perhaps a bit less “darkly” minerally than some wines from this site. Refreshing, complex yet also subtle fruit, great minerality, beautifully flavourful, high but ripe acidity. Juicy, mouthfilling, long. Rating: 91(+?)

Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili 2001
Thanks to Remo. A wine I should have recognized (recovering from a cold), but did not get farther than that it must be Barbaresco and from the 2001 vintage. Garnet-ruby coulour, soft black reflections. Blood orange and dried rose-hop, quite complex and deep, faint little Malaga note that probably prompted Remo to wonder if the bottle was indeed perfectly stored at the shop, and Seri to opine that it seemed readier to drink than the Produttori Rabajà from the same vintage (I do not agree). Nicely complex, more tea-like, if lightly dry and hard tannin. Touch of ginger on the back end. Medium-plus length. The earlier residual sulfur note is completely gone, by the way. More integrated and seemingly “complete” the longer it sat in the glass and/or decanter. Cannot help it, but I happen to find Rabajà soil notes/terroir expression more attractive than those of Asili. Rating: 91+/92(+?)

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà 2001
Thanks to Remo. A wine we fell in love with at release, and that continues to impress. Fresher ruby-black colour. Slightly more rustic tannin, less complexity and depth than Giacosa’s Asili, but similarly as much finesse, and easily as much density of fruit, length, balance and potential harmony. Some blonde orange to rounder blood orange here. Fractionally bigger and fuller-bodied than Giacosa’s Asili. Great QPR buy. Needs and deserves more time in bottle. Rating: 91+/92(+?)

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

Great notes as usual David. What day was Remo's birthday? I just celebrated yesterday (the 22nd).
