Take a chance on fine older white?

by wnissen » Thu Feb 03, 2011 1:56 am

I was cruising the wine aisle at Safeway looking for Trimbach Gewurz (no luck) and decided to check out the clearance bin. I found a 1999 Clos Ste. Hune for $70, less than half the going rate on Wine Searcher. The fill is excellent, capsule spins freely, but the label is badly stained. Realistically, it's been sitting on a shelf for the past decade at room temperature. Worth a flier?

No. You are bound to be disappointed. If you go for the world´s greatest dry white wine, go for a pristine bottle.

This type of abuse always makes me mad!

Especially when an outlet like Safeway makes some attempt to even have such a nice wine (I know they have lots of expensive California wine, but that doesn't count ).

If it helps (probably not) I'm pretty sure the '99 CSH hasn't been around for 10 years yet. Maybe 5?

Thor would know.

I'll add that a bottle of '99 from topflight retailer with cold storage showed more advanced than I would have expected in fall. I'd really be cautious re a bottle in a supermarket for a few years.

How about a bottle of 1987 Leflaive Batard Montrachet GC for $79.99 ? Anyone take that?
