DavidDarlington's New Book..

by TomHill » Tue Mar 29, 2011 8:13 pm

Had dinner last night at Rivoli w/ SteveEdmunds & DavidDarlington. There was wine involved.
One of my most favorite books on Calif wines is David's "Angel's Visits: The Story of Zinfandel". Very well written/highly informative/terrific read.
He will have his 2'nd/new book out this Summer: "Ideal Wine". From his description of some of the topics, it should be an equally interesting read. I'll keep you posted...of course.

Well...yeah, Tom. David's maybe not the most prolific wine writer around...but when he has something to say (either book or W&S article)...
it's worth listening to.....unlike some wine writers who come to mind!!! :-)

The name of the book is actually AN Ideal Wine, case anybody's splitting hairs... :D
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Angels Visits is one of my favourites also, and it is credited in my Pinotage book as the inspiration.

I had assumed David Darlington had died since there were no further books, so I am glad to hear he is still with us and am looking forward to his new book.

Thanks for the info... keep us posted.

I hope they'll be a Kindle version.

Nope...David's very much alive & well. Over the last 3-5 yrs, he's wrote a number of very/very good articles for JoshGreene's
Wine&Spirits magazine. For the last few yrs, he's been very heavily involved in hiis book. Now that it's (near) done, he's looking to
do more wine writing for W&S or others. Steve & I tossed out to him a bunch of topics at dinner that we thought would make good article.
It wasn't clear from our dinnertime repartee exactly what David's "An Ideal Wine" book is about, to me. Sounds like his personal overview/take
on the wine biz over his career writing about wines w/ a focus on some of the people/characters that he's crossed paths with over the yrs.
Whatever it is about, I know it'll be an interesting read.

Tom,

You're confusing me again. Maybe I'm reading this to literally. Darlington wrote Angels' Visits in the late 80s/very early '90s. If he's been writing again for the last 3-5 years what is this "career writing about wine" that you speak of?

What did he do (wine writing related) from 1990 to 2007?

Tom,
Not very good about explaining myself. This "An Ideal Wine" will be David's first wine book since Angel'sVisit, though I do think he updated that book
sometime in the early '00's. And his articles have been in W&S only occasionally over the last 5-6 yrs. And I'd not seen much of his writing before that.
So...David's wine writings do not encompass a very large volume of writing to my knowledge...don't think he's as prolific as some. But he's been very
involved in the wine scene in the Bay area from the late '80's (I think) when he was a writer for the OaklandTribune, maybe even their wine columnist.
So that's what I was trying to say.
Steve has much more knowledge about David's wine writing career. Help us out here, Steve.

Thanks!! I loved Angels' Visits and so I would be very disappointed if I missed his entire career of wine writing!

Any thoughts on my Ridge question down below?
