WTN: 25th Wedding Anniversary Wines

Today is our 25th Wedding Anniversary and we're going out with the immediate family and a few close friends for dinner at the, newly discovered, nearby restaurant called Pistachio. I've selected the following wines for the evening and will report back here with notes later once festivities have concluded.

Lindemans Coonawarra Sesquicentenary Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 (Magnum)

Moet and Chandon Dom Perignon 1995 - still quite infantile in colour and development and blessed with decidedly elegant and subtle aromas and flavour underpinned by a distinguished raw power and intensity - quite wonderful and worth every penny. 93

Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling 1996 (Magnum) - stuffed by the Portuguese cork disease. 55 .... only because the greatness of what the winemaker had intended on the palate was still trying to fight the mould and mustiness of the everpresent TCA.

Lindemans Coonawarra Sesquicentenary Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 (Magnum) - brilliant in the way this beautiful, low alcohol red unfolded and complexed with extended air time. Magnificent fruit and regional mintiness with a bevy of subtle and so painless savoury French oak providing exemplary support. 93

Coutet Cuvee Madame 1986 - couldn't find the bastard of a thing in the box on my spreadsheet! Found a 1983 Doisy-Vedrines instead that was simply brilliant. So adolescent with amazing youthful aromatics and so smooth and well-delineated on an extremely long and flavoursome palate. Terrific acid cut and simply superb length. 93

Seppelt Rutherglen Vintage Port 1972 - not opened.

thanks for the notes. Shame about the corked CFE, and that you couldn't find the anniversary year Barsac, but sounds ike you drank well anyway. Congratulations

Damn, I wanted to see a note on that CFE - I too own a magnum of it - and no other bottles (although I have plenty of 95 and a few 97s still - and one 93!)

Congrats, David. Say, you remind me, I haven't posted my notes on the 15 Australian cabs my L.A. group did a tasting of last weekend. Now, where's my notepad....

Congratulations to you both, David! That is a shame about the '96 CFE. We recently had two half bottles of the '97 CFE show as oxidized, so Trimbach seems to be victimized by closure failure.

I have several magnums of '96 CFE ... this is the first corked example. Previous bottle was outstanding. I've ditched all my 1997 CFE. Was a lovely wine in its youth but went "downhill" some time down the track. My 1989 and 1990 CFE's are still drinking extremely well. Touch wood, no TCA or oxidation problems with these to date.
