BR: Wine Wars by Mike Veseth

by TomHill » Mon Aug 08, 2011 11:55 am

Just completed reading the rather nifty/interesting book. He is an authority on the subject of wine economics. That Mike is an admitted practitioner of the "dismal science" and still able to write an interesting & readable book is to his credit.
The book continually focuses on the "wine wall" that we find in any supermarket, WholeFoods, or TraderJoe's. It describes the impact of Two$Chuck and other commodity wines on the wine world from both a wine afficianado's viewpoint and an economist's view; contrasting the globalization of the wine market and the terroirist's approach. The book is free of vast tables of numbers, and usually just uses numbers to support trends in the wine market...not at all "dismal".
So....is the 2$Chuck phenomena and globalization going to drown the terroirist's approach to wine?? Mike is optimistic that it will not, that both ends will be represented and there will always be a place for the terroir-driven wines that most of us love; that 2$Chuck will allow the bottom-feeders of the market to, perhaps, move up into our sort of wine world.
Bottom line.....this is an informative, well-written, and interesting book that I would recommend to any wine lover interested in what a wine economist has to say.

Sounds like my kind of book, Tom. I'm ordering it ... um, maybe the Kindle edition.

Wouldn't you say, though, since you've been watching this biz since the very start, that the old "This Chablis/Wine Cooler/White Zin is going to open the market to new people and they'll move up to become serious consumers" mantra has been around for a long time?

At the risk of drum-beating, here are a couple of Amazon links that will let folks take a closer look, and should you buy through these links, return a few pence to the WLP.com coffers and help us keep the roof from leaking ...

Yeah, Robin....sorta. But I think much of the decrying of the success of 2$Chuck has to do with the personal animosity that FredFranzia has managed to create towards himself.
I know plenty of drinkers who stated out on SutterHome White Zin and the like and still choose to drink that stuff.
OTOH...there are plenty of those like you & I who cut our vinous teeth in Lancers & Mateus Rose and BlueNun and...gawd forbid...look at what we turned into !!!!!

I too enjoyed Lancers and Mateus back in the day..after they stopped bring ths crackling roses ito the US (a/c tax reasons, I rhink), wd still buy some on an occasional trip to Canada..I enjoyed the old Stiller/Meara Blue Nun commercials more than the wine itself..Not sure what I turned into..
