Good wine stores in Plymouth, Mass?

by Bruce Hayes » Wed Nov 02, 2011 2:06 pm

We will be going to Plymouth later this month (the Thanksgiving weekend as it happens) for a family birthday. Drive down Friday, drive back Monday, birthday on Saturday, so I won't have a lot of time to check out local wine stores.

Are there any good ones people here can recommend in Plymouth or close by?

Thanks.

The best I can do for you Bruce is Douglas Wine & Spirits in New Bedford. It is about 45 minutes from Plymouth. Have a nice trip.

My wife's family landed there about four hundred years ago, but they needed beer.

The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Assuming you're driving down I-81: As you're coming in from the west on I-90, stay on the Pike after Route 128, get off at Exit 17 and head back west a bit on Washington Street, and go to Marty's. Ask for Peter. Tell him I sent you. Worth the trouble.

They're not on the level of the Wine Bottega in the North End of Boston (few stores are!), but Curtis Liquors in Weymouth and Cohasset are not at all bad for suburban stores. The manager of the Weymouth store is a lover of natural wines, so there's always a decent smattering of Louis Dressner and other naturaliste wines there. The Wemouth store, at least, also has a very nice selection of beers.

I second the recommendation of Curtis Liquors in Weymouth, MA. Don't be turned off by the lack of the word "wine" in the store name. They have a very good size selection of wine (including a smattering of Dressner names). The store is only a few minutes off Route 3 (exit 18B) and a worthy stop on your way to Plymouth (Weymouth is about 40 minutes north of Plymouth) on the South Shore.
