1978 Ridge Zinfandel Monte Bello
Color is still dark crimson with roughly 1/4" bricking at the rim. This wine smells fantasticly old world with cassis, forest floor, leather and spice. The flavors are very claret like. As is common with old Zinfandel, this wine has evolved into another "animal". It posses a silky texture, with superb savory flavors in addition to the aromas which continue on the palate. The finish has great length with lingering flavors that really compliment. It is perfectly balanced, the tannins have basically erroded yet the acidity and structure keep this lively and fresh. I loved this wine.

Sounds fantastic, Trip-G. I haven't had any Ridge wines from the 1970s, so I envy you. I have had quite a few from the 1980s, with some stellar showings of the Cabs.

Did you have this with dinner, at a tasting, what??

My best to you and Marina.. hope all is well.
Cheers, Jim

JD - We didn't have 70s wines at that dinner in Anaheim? I was at a pre auction tasting so just tasted 2x with consistent notes. There was also a '80 Ridge Langtry Claret, that was nice but not great wine like the '78 Zin. There was good company. Other memorable wines were the '66 LLC, '85 Lynch Bages. The '00 Sociando was showing well, but a few yrs from my drinking window. Will see you in Jan @ FM3s? Best to you and the family.
Regards,
Gregg
