Apparently he doesn't only do obscure grape varieties, though. A houseguest brought a pinot by him (Carneros grapes) just a few months ago. TN filed at the time below:
2006 Obscurity Cellars Carneros Pinot Noir the other night. The winery is located in the town of Fair Play in California's Eldorado County. And though I did not find it to have the typical cherry-cola Carneros character, I liked it: ripe (but not overripe) cherry fruit that with an attractive, unfiltered rusticity and the beginnings of secondary development. Bright even though overall the acidity is resolved at a level appropriate for a five year old Cal pinot. Should evolve well from here. Showed very well with a pre-dinner plate of duck and truffle pate.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
