Tried last night at BBB:
1. EdmundsStJohn Syrah Parmalee-Hill SonomaVlly (14.2%) Intuition&BlandLuck/Berkeley 1997: Very dark color w/ slight bricking; slight herbal beautiful blackberry/Syrah/blueberry rather smokey/roasted/Rhonish/coffee/mocha bit graphite/pungent very complex perfumed nose; tart bit tannic/dried out strong mineral/graphite/ozone/pungent some blueberry/Syrah very complex smokey/roasted/coffee/Rhonish flavor; very long some tannic/astringent/dried out/hard some blueberry/Syrah quite smokey/roasted/mocha/Rhonish bit graphite/mineral/ozone finish; a beautiful/complex rather Rhonish Syrah but starting to dry out a bit on the palate. $36.00

Drying out? That seems surprising.

The '97 P-H was wickedly tannic from the outset; it was the first year I'd made wine from that site, and I was still trying to get a handle on the fruit. And '97 was a pretty warm season, so I may have picked a bit early because the sugar was beginning to spike a bit.
I don't know how other people think about this, but, for me, it always takes a few years before I feel like I'm confident that I know a vineyard well enough that I can reliably make a correct picking decision. I may do it right every time, but not be SURE I'm doing it right until I've done it for four or five years, or even longer.

Gasp......Steve....like you use Intuition & Blind Luck to make the wine those first few yrs???
