WTN: Three Rieslings..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jun 24, 2013 11:44 am

Tried these three Rieslings over the last few weeks whilst on GrandPa duties:
1. Italo Cescon Riesling IGT: Veneto Traccetto (12%; www.CescanItalo.It) B by CescanItalo Storia e Vini/Roncadelle di Ormelle 2010: Deep gold color; strong grapey/overripe bit caramel/butterscotch slight oxidized fairly strong/grapey nose w/ no R character evident; soft grapey/overripe slight oxidized dry resiny/caramel/butterscotch rather bitter unattractive flavor; med.short grapey/overripe/caramel some oxidized/resiny fairly bitter finish; any R character that may have been in the grape have been pounded into oblivion. $14.00 (Gomers)
_______________
2. ClendenenFamilyVintners Riesling SantaBarbaraCnty (13.5%) Jim/Isabelle/Knox Clendenen/SantaMaria 2009: Med.gold color; beautiful gout de petrol/Mosel valve oil rather floral/R/bit steely/piney some complex nose; soft bit off-dry (.4%?) floral/insecticide/R bit metallic/chalky pleasant flavor; med.long metallic/steely/chalky light floral/R/pineapple bit mineral/petrol finish; a really lovely Germanic/valve oil nose but not quite as interesting on the palate; a rather pleasant/interesting R but just that. $19.00 (Gomers)
_______________
3. Leeuwin Estate Riesling MargaretRiver/WesternAustralia (Art Series; 12.0%; www.LeeuwinEstate.com.Au) 2011: Pale yellow color; rather Mosel valve oil/petrol/mineral strong lemon/lime/R/floral steely/metallic classic Oz R lovely nose; very tart/lean/citric/grapefruity lemon/lime steely/mineral/metallic light floral/R/carnations flavor; long very citric/mineral/grapefruity acid/tart light floral/R/lemon/lime bit Mosel valve oil finish; a classic MargaretRiver R that will go out 20 yrs; stupid/silly price for a wine that should be spectacular at 10-20 yrs. $16.00 (PrimaIlC)

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Had never seen a Riesling from the Veneto. Probably will not bother if'n I see one again. The R from the AltoAdige and the Piemonte can be, however, quite nice.

Tom -

Thank you for the notes. Have never seen a Clendenen or Au Bon Climat Riesling. Also, I'm not surprised about the how the Veneto Riesling showed - if I want Italian Riesling, I'll stick with Alto Adige, and a couple of Piemontese and Lombardian wines.

As for the Leeuwin, I've only had the 2004. While it was a very good wine in 2007, I would expect it to be starting to fade now - the fruit was quite nice, but the structure wasn't as good as the 2004 Grosset Polish Hill (my pick for the best Australian Riesling). Glad to read that the 2011 shows more in the way of staying power.
