pronunciation help

I've been calling it BV, but I know it's Beaulieu. How do you pronounce it?

I'll take a stab at this. Bo, with a long o sound, lyoo, with the oo from "took", or the u from "put". It's difficult because it isn't exactly that, but I don't know how else to describe it, and it's close enough.

I went there many years ago and was told they pronounced it as

Burr low

(which seemed strange then as I was familiar with the pronnciation here in England where Beaulieu is famous as a stately home pronounced Bew lee (bew to rhyme with yoo)

I'm with Craig on this one. "Bow-l'yoo" comes as close as I can type to the Americanized French name of this old-line California producer.

It's California! Take a toke and hang, man!
Bow-LOO is the most common thing. But hey, man, they're in the wine biz! They'll sell whatever you want to call it, as long as you can point to it on the menu!
(Sort of like a French restaurant.)

FWIW, the Cali pronunciation seems closer to the French (coarsely bowl-yeu) than to the English bew-lee.

Thank you all! Now, altho' still confused, I have a bunch to choose from. I like the "French-ish" pronuncation, so will probably go with that. It seems logical. "Burr-low" seems to go against the spelling, but hey, it's their wine, so they can call it what they want! On the other hand, when I say BV, I get the wine, so guess that's okay, too!

I think that's the only way of conveying the sound of lieu. Off hand, I can't think of any English word which has that sound.

Both British and American usage mangle it in "lieutenant". British as "leff" and American as "loo" .
