Tried this last night:
1. Ravenswood Zin DickersonVnyd/NapaVlly (750 cs; Bttld: June 2012; 14.8%; www.RavenswoodWinery.com) 2010
: Dark color; very strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin some dusty/OV bit RCCola/peppery some toasty/smokey/oak quite spicy nose; slightly tart rather hard/tannic/grippy very strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin some duusty/OV rather spicy/RCCola/peppery some smokey/oak flavor; very long strong blackberry/Zin/boysenberry/very spicy light toasty/smokey/oak slight complex/OV finish w/ hard/angular tannins; quite structured w/ hard/grippy tannins and needs 3-6 yrs yet; doesn't have the characteristic Dickerson menthol/eucalyptus I recall of old; not as ripe/lush as Bedrock or Carlisle but playing in that same league. $34.00 (KK)

1. I, of course, followed JoelPeterson from the very start....even before the very start. First met him around '74 or so when he was working in the cellar at JoeSwan's and ole Joe introduced us. Then met again about '75-'76 at a wine shop in the business district of SanFrancisco. PhilReich introduced him as a guy who was starting his own winery and specializing in Zinfandel. And, of course, when the first Ravenswood/VogensenVnyd '76 came out; I was right there in line.
The Ravenswood vnyd designate Zins were always a hot item and not so easy to find. When Joel & Reed sold Ravenswood some yrs ago to Constellation or Diaego, there was much weeping & wailing and gnashing of teeth....the downfall of Ravenswood as a primo label was a sure thing.
Supposedly, Joel still remains involved in the production of the Ravenswood vnyd designate Zins. At what level, I'm not sure. Since the sale, I've not followed the Ravenswood Zins very closely. When I saw this on the shelf, not seen a Dickerson around in yrs, I thought it was time for a trip down memory lane.
If the Ravenswood single vnyd Zins have crashed & burned...you couldn't tell it from this wine. Though it didn't show any of the classic Dickerson menthol/eucalyptus character of old; it was a firm/structured Zin w/ loads of blackberry/Zin fruit. Definitely still in the Zinfandel big-leagues.
