New forum server-some important tips

by David M. Bueker » Wed Sep 24, 2014 8:41 pm

Hey folks,

We are now on a new server. Lots are experiencing problems with having to log in every time. I went through it with every device imaginable, so here is what works:

Step 1: near the bottom of the forum is a link to Delete All Board Cookies-click it and confirm to delete
Step 2: once back on the forum main page, go to your bookmarks/favorites and delete your WLDG forum bookmark
Step 3: log back in the the forum
Step 4: set a new bookmark/favorite

That should do it. It worked for me on my laptop (with IE), my PC (with Firefox) and my iDevices (Safari). Have not done my Kindle Fire yet, but expect it will work there as well.

Post questions here, and Robin and I will try to get everything ironed out.

Sorry for the hassle. Should be a temporary issue.

step 2 Bob - make sure you are on the forum page (not logged in) and delete your bookmark

Step 3 - hit the little login word near the upper right of the page and do your login stuff

Step 4 - set a new bookmark

Thank you for the advice, David. Everything seems to be back to normal for this Firefox loyalist.

Bob,

We are all on the new forum now. Please be patient, as we are having a few cookie problems. Should all be ironed out in a few days.

I went through all the steps and still have to login every time I visit the forum. Is this part of the new system?

Carl, once everything is installed - it may be a few weeks - this issue should go away.

However, unless you're using a very unusual browser setup, following the instructions in this thread should clear it up for you. You may need to try once or twice. '

First, while you're logged out, click the "forget cookies" button near the bottom of the main forum page.

Then log in, taking care to click "Keep me logged in,"

Finally, discard any old bookmarks that point to the old "wineloverspage.com/forum/village ... " The new bookmark should point to the new URL, "forums.wineloverspage.com ... "

If you have the misfortune to be using Internet Explorer, you may find your browser unusually reluctant to change, but it can be done. 8)

I use Firefox but I can't get the new forum to remember my login--I have to log in every time I visit. I tried the steps that Robin and Dave outlined. I have similar problems with other phpBB-based forums. I think it has something to do with Intel's corporate firewall.

Just keeping everyone up to date, the new PhpBB forum software will probably go in tomorrow, with the new "skin" folloing soonish after. There could be brief closures. Things will look different. We may have events like the recent indigestible cookies.

But I ask your famous patience and good will. At the end of the day we expect this forum to be cleaner, safer, more modern in appearance and, we hope, even more fun. And through much better social media integration, I hope that we can continue to thrive and grow in an era when corporate social media are gradually wiping out smaller forums that can't or won't adapt.

So hang with us. I hope we can look back in a week or two and say, "Whoa! That was a fun ride."

It sounds like Bob is using an old bookmark. It's best to start your bookmark at the top,

Why did this stop working again today after a couple day working fine? Now I again need to login every time.

You are not alone Otto. I seem to be in 2 WLDG sites, the old one and the current. In fact I am not even sure which is now the current and new site :( .

Otto, we're working on an upgrade of several forum features aimed at improving speed, asthetics and security. From time to time, things may not be entirely to our liking. I do hope that all of you will be patient, and consider what a "First World problem" you have just expressed. ;)

FYI, we don't expect any work to go on today, but tomorrow there may be brief detours and possible interruptions in service. This, too, shall pass. :)
