WTN: What went wrong with this bottle?

2012 Les Quéradières Côtes du Rhône Villages Sablet - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Sablet (12/4/2014)
This bottle showed no fruit and a weird aroma reminiscent of the smell immediately after a carpet has been vacuum cleaned. What has happened? NR (flawed)

Hard to know, Tim, although I'd probably look at an offbeat manifestation of TCA, or maybe TCA combined with a whack of Rhone garrigues?

Yeah, odd manifestation of cork taint would be my guess as well.

If the TCA hypothesis is correct, I can safely buy another bottle of what was a useful QPR quaffer (<€6). If that other bottle turns out the same, then there is a problem with the bottling run and I should alert the seller.

Another hypothesis is an odd bacterial infection. I guess that could affect just one bottle.

I vote for tainted cork. The smell after carpet is cleaned is a mix of chemical and damp material (wet rag).
Did you sniff the cork?

It's always possible, but not likely that a bacterial infection would hit just one bottle out of a bottling line.
