Bedrock Teroldego??

by TomHill » Sun Dec 21, 2014 10:45 pm

Was entering my recent Bedrock wines into my tasting data base. When I got to the Bedrock DolinsekHeritage, I noticed there was Teroldego in the blend. Say whot??? Old vine Teroldego in Calif. News to me.
There are a few modern plantings of Teroldego in Calif...Lodi/Foothills/YoloCnty. The only one I've tried is the Ampphora..which was pleasant enough...but just that. Didn't hold a candle to a Foradori. Looks as if all the Calif plantings are in the wrong areas. It's a variety I'd think would be a natural for HumboltCnty or SantaCruzMtns. MonteBelloTeroldego...it'd bring tears to my eyes.
JimClendenen has been making IlPodere Teroldego for a number of yrs now. It's actually pretty good Teroldego.
But this BedrockDolinsek was the first I'd ever heard of any old-vine Teroldego in Calif. Can that really be?? Any idea of how many vines of it in Dolinsek?? Is there any attempts to propagate it?? (You listening, MattRorick??).
This is really something to get excited about. I have dreams of the NapaVlly being carpeted with Teroldego and LaCrima di Morra de Alba and Refosco. It'll happen someday.

Neat!

I had not heard of such a thing in California either.

Shouldn’t really surprise any one; with the Italian Swiss Colony and the Italian contribution to the California wine industry. For years they were just known as “mixed black grapes”. It was California “table wine” that kept these grapes around. Using yesteryears “workhorse” grapes is now considered “cool” and the “in-thing”.
