2000 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas (1/12/2015)After years of wondering where this wine was going, it finally went somewhere. The fizz is gone, the fruit is mellow and there is just a wealth of herbal and warm earth tones. I drank it with beef stew that was liberally infused with mushrooms, and the results were lights out perfect. $18.99 and worth way more than that just for the experience of the wine with the food. Wow!

Interesting tasting note. I tasted a 2010 Cayron gigondas and promptly bought almost a case for my cellar figuring it would taste pretty good by this year with hearty fare. The tannins were soft and the wine seemed like an early drinker in many aspects. I'll have to try a bottle in the coming weeks.

Up here, Gigondas used to be great value for the money. Times change and the prices have been creeping up . Still some very good domaines to choose from however.

Regarding value, the bottle I drank last night cost $18.99. Current vintages of the wine (2010-2012) can be had for $25-$30, which is not an egregious increase over the course of 10-12 years.

When I first started in wine around 2001-02 it was in Berkeley so I was often at Kermit Lynch and drank a bunch of Cayron and Trignon and they were pretty much guaranteed to give pleasure. So easy that way!
Of course I had to 'graduate' to more fickle regions!

That punk is better spent on Louis Carillon - I know because I've used it myself.
