2013 Hiedler Grüner Veltliner Reserve Kittmannsberg - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (6/18/2016)
Most of the attention paid to Austrian wine is limited to a very small range of producers, mostly from the Wachau. Sure there is a bit of attention for Nigl, Brundlmayer and Gobelsburg, but it often seems like sympathy, rather than the praise the wines actually deserve. Then there are the other producers who labor in the shadows. Hiedler is one of those.
I first tasted this wine at a Terry Theise event at Table & Vine, and loved it. Fast-forward to a dinner with a lot of green elements, so a Grüner Veltliner is called for. This wine really delivers, and it does so at a steal of a price. Tons of peach, ripe apple and fresh, green accents (lime, cress) swirl through a rich palate presence and freshening acidity on the expansive finish. The fruit is very persistent, carrying through to the next sip, and playing well with food and on its own. Delicious stuff, and a fine value at around $30.
