Good News

by Howie Hart » Wed Jul 20, 2016 6:18 am

I haven’t been posting much here in a while and here’s why. In December, I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. This was very disheartening, as my wife died from this 12 years ago. In February I had surgery, which removed almost all of my large intestine. In April I started chemo, which consists of 6 hours in the infusion clinic at the VA hospital and 2 days of being attached to a pump. This is repeated every 2 weeks. I’m scheduled for 12 sessions, which will end at the end of September. After the 6th session, which was 2 weeks ago, they did a CAT scan last week and there is no evidence of any cancer. I will complete the chemo regimen through September.
The chemo has some nasty side effects, which subside somewhat over the two weeks. One is extreme sensitivity to cold. I have to put my winter gloves on to take things out of the fridge or freezer. Another is that my mouth and tongue constantly feel like I ate a bucket of atomic chicken wings. It makes Riesling taste like 151 Rum. Until last weekend, I had only a few sips of wine since April. I can’t eat spicy foods and foods I normally enjoyed taste bland. On Saturday, I ate part of a pot-laced biscotti before going to a BBQ. Not only did I enjoy the food, but I also enjoyed several glasses of wine. While the pot did not give me a buzz, I was in good spirits and enjoyed myself. I figure that after my chemo session are complete, it my take 4-8 weeks to recover back to normal and I will be enjoying wine and food regularly by mid-November.
The folks at the VA Hospital have been great and I’m grateful to them.

Hey Howie, That is wonderful news that you are on the road to total recovery. You and MaryJo will be very much missed at MoCool and it looks like I will have to bring my own coffee! You will be in our thoughts.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I regret having to miss MOCOOL this year. It seems to be shaping up into quite an event. I am going to order a tee shirt anyway. :) I've been following Wine Focus and would normally have posted during Loire and this month's Riesling. In my head I'm already planning a November Wine Dinner. :)

Excellent to hear there is no sign of it anymore. :) And good to read that taste sensations should normalize!

What a story! (And now I know what to do if I ever feel the need to drink 151 Rum but don't want the attendant regurgitation  )

Congrats on pulling through, and hope that's the end of it! Wonderful to hear that the VA Hospital was so supportive. Great news all the way around!

Howie, sorry to hear you're a victim of that horrible disease, but glad to hear the treatment is going well. Let's hope for full remission in September.

Howie,
Great news that you look to be cancer-free. It doesn't sound like its been much fun this year,
but sounds like you're in the home stretch. We've missed you around here. I've found
it tough being the only old guy around here. I need company here. Come back soon.

Howie, I only just saw this! My oh my, what you've been through and what great news you now have. What a relief, and how uplifting that you shared it. Not me, thankfully, but someone else reading this might be at the start or middle of something very similar and your words will give them loads of hope. The next glass of wine I pour, I'll raise it to you. Big hugs, my friend.

Howie: a friend is on a long treatment of meds that have screwed up her taste buds. I just suggested that she read your post and consider the possibility that pot-laced something might improve things for her until she's through this. She's open to it and is going to check with her doctor. So see, your sharing has already had a positive effect.

Jenise - I've noticed a physical tension - tight muscles in the neck and shoulders. A little pot relieves this better than ibuprofen. It also lifts my spirits and improves my taste buds and appetite. It also helps me sleep. Good luck to your friend.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
