WTN: 2005 Vissoux Beaujolais VV

by Dale Williams » Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:48 am

Monday Betsy made roast chicken (combining the Zuni Cafe recipe with a Greek spice recipe) , a watercress puree, and roast potatoes with herbs. With the Zuni recipe I usually serve Pinot Noir, but I thought with the extra spices Gamay might be effectrive. So I opened the 2005 Pierre-Marie Chermette (Domaine du Vissoux) Cuvée Traditionelle Vieilles Vignes Beaujolais. Medium-bodied. Beautiful deep dark cherry fruit, here's a non-cru Beaujolais that could give most village Burgundies a run for their money. Rich yet delicate, elegant wine. Good finish. Great value at $12-13, I placed an order for more immediately. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

This has been getting lots of positive talk elsewhere (here's a hint: Not on Squires' board :)), and performed very well on my Christmas table.

I hear good things about the rest of their 05 lineup, although I haven't tasted any. But might be slotting one in this weekend.

I think the Chermette VV is excellent. He made a VV Nouveau, too, which was actually very pleasant, and which has led me to believe that the '06 vintage will be every bit as good as '05.

PS: Some months ago I visited the Squires BBS at erobertparker. I browsed around, and pretty soon I felt like The Fool Killer http://gaslight.mtroyal.ab.ca/fableX19.htm. I haven't been back.

Dale,
I have also tried the Fleurie, Poncie and the Moulin a Vent from this producer's 2005 vintage; both cut from the same cloth but probably needing a little time in bottle to show their very best.

I have one of the Fleurie Poncie but it seems to have sold out locally.
