WTN: Nigl GrunerVeltliner TBA '13...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Oct 26, 2016 1:38 pm

Tasted this dessert wine in our B&B in Stanjel (10/15/16):
1. Nigl GrunerVeltliner TBA Nieder Osterreich (Pradikatswein; N 7624/15; EA) Senftenberg/Priel 2013: Deep gold
color; very intense botrytis/apricotty/peachy/honeyed slight dried mango classic TBA nose w/ little obvious
GV fruit; slightly tart quite sweet intense botrytis/TBA/peachy/apricotty/dried mangos some earthy/complex
flavor; very long/lingering very sweet lightly tart very intense botrytis/peachy/apricotty light earthy/honeyed/
honeycomb quite viscous/heavy bodied finish; huge classic botrytis/TBA character but says nothing about GV
that I can tell; should age well for yrs & yrs. Euros 28.00/hlf

1. We were staying in the Gastehaus Leopold-Janu in Senftenberg just north of Krems about 20 km. The host suggested
we visit Proidl and Nigl there in the town. So we took the long walk down to Nigl and visited their tasting
room. Martin Nigl passed thru & I visited with him for 10 min or so. Martin's Dad was pouring at the tasting
bar. He was quite a hoot and took my needling about not having a Zinfandel in their lineup in good nature.

The Nigl wines are a TerryThiese Slctn and imported by SkurnikWines. I've often tried them and have found
them absolutely first-rate expressions of Austrian and Kremstal wines.

Thanks Tom.

I have followed Nigl from the very start of Terry's venture importing Austrian wines. They are always beacons of clarity.

Of course a TBA can be so overly dominated by botrytis that varietal character is obscured. It's why I tend to prefer Auslese/BA level or Eiswein to TBA.

That being said, I drink Nigl for the dry wines.
