WTN: Prum Transformation

by David M. Bueker » Wed Apr 12, 2017 9:04 am

1999 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/11/2017)
Consumed over two nights, this was the answer to an old question: how long will it take for the 1999s to come into balance. At least for this wine the answer was eighteen years. I had sampled this bottling multiple times since release, and while it was always good, it was also rather soft and diffuse. This time it was different, with focused fruit and mineral aromas, freshness on the palate rather than merely richness/softness, and a lingering yet clear finish. It was a heck of a transformation, and one that prompted hope for other 1999s to come.

Nice. I don't think of '99 as a particularly noteworthy vintage, but I've quite liked the last few I've tasted (Dr Fischer OckBock Auslese and Zilliken Rausch Spat). This sounds even better

Saar did remarkably well in 1999. Apparently the Prums consider it a great vintage (per their website). I did not believe it until I had a repeat great performance.
