WTN: WindGap TrousseauGris '16...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Apr 28, 2017 10:46 am

My WindGaps arrived ystrday, so I pobega'd:
1. WindGap TrousseauGris Fanucchi-WoodRd Vnyd (11.8%; Plntd: 1981; Frmtd: concrete eggs; 715 cs;
www.WindGapWines.com) Sebastapol 2016
: Light gold color; rather stony/mineral/chalky bit perfumed talc light grapey/mango bit simple nose; fairly tart/metallic/grapefruity bit grapey/mango rather mineral/chalky/stony rather briney/savory flavor; fairly long quite chalky/mineral/stony/grapefruity rather tart/metallic/steely savory finish; a quite minerally/savory/salado kind of white; reminds some of old-timey Sebastiano Gray Riesling w/o the overt fruitiness, a bit like a Friuli Friuliano w/o the aromatics, more like a Savoie Jacquere w/ more richness; a pleasant enough wine that needs food w/ it. $26.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. TrouseauGris is found mostly in the Jura. There apparently are some Alsatian connections as well. It was onetime grown a lot in Calif as GrayRiesling, but plantings have dwindled considerably.

Here is a TG note from a while back.

2013 Zeitgeist Trousseau Gris, Russian River Valley.

Not a winery that appears to get much notice. Good natural cork, $30 Cdn, 13% alc. The color is best described as a medium lemon/copper/onion skin. Saw some reference to "orange wine" but not this one folks.
Some apricot on the nose along with grassy tones, peach. Initial entry thought is dry-ish, refreshing, crisp to a degree. Good grip and acidity. Citrus on the finish, mineral, melon, peach maybe? Complex but hard to pin everything down. "Could mistake for a Sauv Blanc" from across the table. Served blind would be of interest!!
