A Rose of MALBEC of all things!

Visited Hanna Winery as part of the "Route 128" event. Gorgeous views from their hilltop tasting room. The wines overall were OK, being standard California wines, but they produced a Rose of Malbec this year that was a major homerun! A gorgeous salmon color. Strawberry and salinity on the nose and palate. Not sweet at all-this is right up my alley as far as Roses. As I noted, a light, bracing strawberry fruit complemented by the minerality (whatever that means) that really complements food. Outstanding!

Also that night: 2009 Harmonique Pinot Noir. Vintages Elmwood had this at an amazing price. Shows the benefit of a bit of bottle age, with yummy pomegranate, cherry and plum fruit and a lovely base of earthiness-that mushroomy character. Oak still present-this might have been too oaky as a young wine? But a 2009 is showing very well right now!

Tara Bella (Russian River Valley) Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. What an elegant, bracing, FRESH take on Cabernet Sauvignon. They bottle two separate wines from different clones and different vineyards. Our favorite was the Bordeaux Clone 7, which was just a touch deeper and earthier than the Argentine Clone 7 bottling. But both wines are savory and bright and would just sing with bottle age and food. The owners and staff are some of the funnest and friendliest in the business! Every time I have visited, I have really enjoyed myself.
