WTN: Pais - Positive and Negative reactions

Monasterio de Maule País 2015 San Xavier Chile

Opened this last night, was entranced by its bright intense dark red colour and powerful nose of violets, Tasted fresh and delicious with strong violet flavours.

But Joan grimaced at the smell and taste; she hated it so much I had to open a different bottle.

This morning while setting up for breakfast.I picked up and smelled the glass she'd left last night, same nose, took a mouthfull and it tasted just as good (I disn't swallow)

There's quite a lot of old-vine Pais in Chile - this came from a 60 year-old vineyard - and it's a grape without a good reputation but mostly I think because the grape has been over-produced to make cheap wines. The above was been made by a 'flying-winemaker' from M&S.

Pais is the same as as Listan Prieta, which we probably had in Lanzarote (although it is throughly confused there with Listan Negro) and it is also the same as California's Mission, which we've had and enjoyed but they didn't have this pronounced violet character.

Shocked I am, Peter. It is OK to drink wine w/ your breakfast CocaPuffs!!
There's been a growing interest in making RTW out of Mission over here in Calif, not just for Angelica.
Some of them (Harrington) are pretty good. The few from NewMexico...pretty dreadful.
